Accessing Kidepo National Park is simple and straightforward because it has a proper road network that is still poor but is able to connect the communities and the park around it to the other districts. One can decide to access kidepo by two kinds of means and those are by air and by road.
Accessing Kidepo National Park By Road
Being the furthest among all national parks in Uganda, driving to Kidepo valley national park is most tiring journeys while on a Uganda tour. Roads to Kidepo are still poorly developed. So accessing Kidepo national park requires a 4X4 Safari vehicle in good working conditions. Driving to Kidepo valley national park is about 10 – 14 hours on both tarmac and marram roads. This requires 2 days driving period to avoid over tiring on your trip. There are about 3-4 routes to reach Kidepo valley national park. The shortest route to Kidepo is the Northern driving route via Gulu and Kitgum towns, so stopping for a night rest at one of the towns is recommended.
The other route is the Eastern route which can be divided into 2 different routes on reaching Mbale or Soroti districts. It’s the longest though more interesting driving through Jinja – the source of River Nile, Mbale where you find the Sipi falls and Mount Elgon. The journey takes about 11-14 hours. Both routes are interesting driving through with stopovers for lunch, stretching and adventure. Commonly used and best vehicles for a safari in Kidepo are the 4X4 Land cruise and 4WD super custom vehicles. They are designed to give comfort to tourists as they drive to their destinations. A tourists vehicle should have a pop-up roof for a game drive, Air-condition, freezer, first aid kit, fire extinguisher to mention a few.
